Review: Heroes of Newerth

Hello and welcome to my first review of Heroes of Newerth.

With more than 2000 hours clocked playing this game, I can say without a doubt that this game is definitely one of my top 10 games of all time. I started playing it back in 2012, when a friend introduced me to it while we were both in university, studying nothing else but Information Technology of course!

Enough about my history, let's talk about the game. Heroes of Newerth is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game, competing with Dota 2 and League of Legends. What distinguishes it from the other two mentioned, are a few things. Firstly, the animations. HoN's animations aren't as crispy clear as Dota 2's, but more realistic than LoL's. I am not entirely sure, but pretty damn sure the guys at S2 Games (now known as Frostburn Studios), created the game and it's engine from scratch. Why do I say that? Because of all the bugs! Thankfully they became less and less as time went by, but the whole UI changed so much over time, that one can not but appreciate the effort still going into this game even today (2020).

Secondly, the whole theme of the game is kind of like Happy Tree Friends. Well, not as bad in that it doesn't give one that sick feeling in the stomach, but there is also the same amount of gore involved, and I like it (okay, maybe not as much gore either!). For example, in the game one has the ability to taunt one's foe, showing a fancy, among others of the same nature, animation of a baby crying before exploding into bits of human flesh, if one succeeds in killing one's foe. This, accompanied with the choice of a gay dude, a seductive lady or a pimp announcing when your tower is destroyed makes the game very enjoyable and funny.

I probably should have lead with this, but the game is about the Legion (good guys) and the Hellbourne (bad guys) battling it out in an all-out, eternal battle to destroy the other team's Ancient, which is a building all the way back in their base that the other team has to get to by destroying 2 or more (depending on game-mode) towers. What makes it fun is that each team has a number of heroes, each equipped with their own skills and abilities, some working in conjunction with others, some countering other heroes. The best part? You as the player get to pick any one of them to play with. Having done that, you team up with 4 other players, or bots if you are new and still practicing, fight your way through waves of death, destruction and creeps, until you end up with either your own or the enemy's Ancient destroyed, resulting in a loss or a win respectively. I should clarify: In MOBA's, and HoN is no exception, you get creeps. These are critters that spawn every minute, charging down one of the three lanes (middle, top or bottom) until they reach the other team's creep wave, at which point they fight to the death. Your job as a player to try to get a last hit on as many of these creeps as possible, as this gives you gold, which you can use to buy items to increase your power.

I should also mention that in HoN you also get real life creeps playing the game, sometimes alongside you, in your own team! Yes, keep your guard up when playing this game, as the report-a-player function does not work!
